Summer Workshop 2005

Teaching the workshop :

Workshop will encompass composition, improvisation, developing and arranging material for small ensembles. The focus will be on creating an interactive, collaborative approach to the interpretation of new material with the ultimate goal of attaining a unified sound within the group.

COST IS $100

Day 1:

1) Quartet performs new compositions demonstrating their approach

to learning and developing raw material. This can include finished

tunes, melodic themes and/or spontaneous compositions.

2) Groups are formed from participants to emulate same process.

Participants can choose to play their own work or the music of

Cotangent.

Break

3) Quartet talks about approaches to writing and choosing/arranging

material for a specific group. Participants must write a minimum

of twelve bars based on the material and composition techniques

discussed by Contangent.

4) ‘Game' from 2004. Opens ears, creates a sense of cohesiveness.

5) Groups play tunes from morning.

Evening concert: Chronology Trio, Rick Cline Group

Day 2:

1) Explore selected material. Time allotted for individual attention.

2) Groups work on subjects discussed.

Break

3) Quartet explores and develops participant material.

Can be existing or newly created works.

 4) Participants emulate this process.

Break

Evening concert: Select participants works, Aimee Sullivan Group, Cotangent .
