Sam Macy

Sam Macy originally became interested in being a musician through his parents who have always been avid listeners of jazz. Growing up near Chicago and then Charlotte, he was often exposed to jazz music. In high school, he studied with Bill Hanna and Ari Lehtela. In 1997 he began attending UNCA where he was a student of Tim Haden. Sam also took lessons with Mark Boling at the University of Tennessee and New York Guitarist Ben Sher. He was member of the "Taken Back Quartet" and founding member of the Jazz Composers Forum. As Composers-in-Residence with the Forum, Macy contributed compositions and performed on concerts for two years. Since relocating to Chicago, he has continued to compose and perform his own music.
